Yellow bowl of popcorn in front of a Netflix screen – Run Away on Netflix review

Where to watch:

Run Away is streaming on Netflix (UK). You’ll need a subscription. Netflix plans start from £5.99/month in the UK (Standard with adverts). Prices can change, so double-check your plan options when you sign up.

No doubt you’re here because you have been asking, “Is Run Away actually worth watching?” and the answer is: yes, if you like twisty Harlan Coben thrillers.

It’s a bit of a slow burn at first (I nearly wandered off to make a brew), but once the story threads start connecting, it turns into a proper “wait… WHAT?” kind of binge.

Quick facts (because we all love a shortcut)

  • Title: Run Away
  • Platform: Netflix
  • Type: Limited series (miniseries)
  • Episodes: 8
  • Age rating: 16+ (Netflix listing)
  • Main cast: James Nesbitt, Ruth Jones, Alfred Enoch (plus Minnie Driver and more)
  • Our rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

What’s Run Away about?

At the centre of it all is Simon Greene, a dad whose daughter Paige disappears, and when he tries to find her, things spiral into a much bigger mess involving a murder investigation and secrets that start unravelling at speed.

If you enjoy dramas where:

  • everyone seems to be hiding something,
  • the police suspect the “wrong” person (or do they?),
  • and you keep saying “one more episode” until it’s suddenly 1am…

…you’re in the right place.

My mini review: slow start, then it grabs you

I’ll be honest: the first part feels like it’s laying a lot of pieces on the table. There are side stories, new faces and little details that don’t seem important… until they absolutely are.

But once it gets going, it’s classic Coben pacing: tension, suspicion, misdirection, and a finale that made me go, “I genuinely did not see that coming.” (No spoilers here – I’m not that person.)

The cast is doing a lot of heavy lifting (in a good way)

This is one of those shows where you can feel the quality because the performances are properly solid.

  • James Nesbitt is brilliant at the “desperate but determined” thing.
  • Ruth Jones is fantastic as a private investigator, and yes, it’s very satisfying seeing her in a darker, grittier role.
  • Alfred Enoch adds that steady “we’re not buying your story” energy that every good thriller needs. You may recognise Alfred Enoch as Dean Thomas from the Harry Potter films.

Best bits (without ruining anything)

  • It’s bingeable: 8 episodes is the sweet spot where you get a full story without it dragging for 3 months.
  • The plot threads actually connect: the early “why are we following this person?” moments do pay off.
  • The ending lands: you don’t feel fobbed off, and that’s rarer than it should be.

Heads up before you press play

  • Give it time: if you’re not hooked in episode 1, try another. It builds.
  • It’s not cosy: it’s a thriller, and it goes to some dark places (emotionally, not just “ooh a bit moody”).
  • Don’t Google the ending unless you enjoy ruining your own fun (no judgement… ok, a little judgement).
